Cardio Athletic Kickbox

Behind The Scenes Fitness

Fitness buffs caught up in the "Tae Bo" craze might appreciate this alternative cardio-kickboxing workout. A high energy routine created by fitness trainer Eversley Forte, it combines boxing punches, martial-arts kicks, and other athletic drills to tone muscles and strengthen the heart. Forte's instruction style is focused yet relaxed. He clearly enjoys introducing new takers to his routine, which is being taught at selected health clubs in the San Francisco area. In a bid not to isolate any men or women who want to join in, he offers modifications on his workout for low-, moderate-, and high-impact intensity.

Cardio Athletic Kickbox II

"Play hard, play safe, and have a good time doing it," invites aerobic kickboxing master instructor Eversley Forte. This high-intensity, cardio kickboxing workout is aimed at the intermediate to advanced exerciser. Forte starts by introducing the basic punches and kicks, emphasizing proper body alignment and technique. Then he leads a workout that continues to climb in intensity, first doing moves in isolation, then combining them. "Jab, jab, upper, upper, front kick, side kick, shuffle," Forte commands--and that's just the first routine. It's heavy cardio, and not for the beginning exerciser, although one class participant demonstrates low-impact modifications so you can tone it down a little. Forte is an excellent instructor, a consummate professional, motivating and skillful. He explains and cues clearly, keeping the workout both challenging and manageable, and he always takes the time to make sure you understand the technique. Definitely a hot workout. --Joan Price

Eversley Forte is certified to teach aerobics by both the ACE (American Council on Exercise) and the ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine), has had training in martial arts, teaches his class to "play hard but play safe," and with his humor and contagious energy reminds me a little of a Billy Blanks-Richard Simmons combo. Throughout the program Forte teaches correct form and movements for various kicks and punches, gives appropriate options for low and moderate workout intensity, and seems to genuinely enjoy hamming it up for his workout buddies and the viewing audience. The production values are no-frill, but solid, and the pace of the program is ideal for those 'regular' people who have decided to kick their exercise session up a notch. Recommended. Aud: P. (N. Forte kicks students into shape with cardio class

“Punch, hook, front kick, side kick!” he yells, standing beside you, calling for you to continue, grunting with each move. “Just eight more.” He moves around the room, scanning for another tired person. Finding one, he approaches and starts shadow boxing.

It is a typical Monday afternoon in Roble Gym, where Eversley Forte is instructing his bi-weekly cardiovascular, non-contact kickboxing class. (Click for more)

Move over, Billy Blanks (of Tae-Bo fame), and make room for fitness instructor Eversley Forte's superior workout video. Forte and six participants begin with moderate, low-impact moves before escalating into an aggressive workout that incorporates a wide variety of boxing punches, martial arts kicks, and other invigorating athletic moves. Backed by energetic, upbeat music, Forte's running commentary successfully combines instructions with information on proper mechanics.

Cardio Athletic Kickbox - Instructor Series I

This cardio kickboxing video is aimed at fitness instructors, trainers, and advanced exercisers. Eversley Forte first explains and demonstrates the moves you'll use in the workout, showing the correct form. Because the video is geared to instructors, he shows what can go wrong with each move as well as how to do it right. Forte and his team (men and women, all impressively competent and usually deadly serious) teach an intermediate-to-advanced workout using first hand-elbow combinations, then knee-kick combinations, progressively moving to more advanced routines and combinations. Forte doesn't just do the workout himself; he interacts with the other demonstrators and points out technique. One demonstrator shows low-impact and lighter-intensity variations throughout.

If you're a home exerciser using this as a workout, you'll sweat plenty and use muscles you didn't know you had. If you're an instructor or trainer, you'll learn both technique and choreography from a master instructor. This is a valuable video for anyone who enjoys cardio kickboxing and wants to improve technique while getting a hot workout at the same time. --Joan Price

"Forte makes the session a lot of fun, ultimately giving Blanks a run for his money. Intermediate exercisers will be happiest with this video. It's a little too lightweight for many advanced exercisers, and definitely a stretch for total beginners. So if you know your way around kickboxing, but want to learn more - and better - this video will make a good addition to your library. Click for more"

The Cardio Athletic Kickbox method was developed by Eversley Forte -- martial artist, actor, stunt performer, and certified trainer and teacher. It is obvious from his stilted delivery and line readings in the opening sequence that acting is the least of these. Where he, and the video, turn interesting and useful is when the workout begins. Forte combines fundamental aerobics principles and the basic athletic moves of kickboxing (presently a very hot sport among men and women). The participants and demonstrators here are, of course, in perfect physical form and well schooled in the technique. Forte's expertise as an instructor is apparent: his pace, count downs, and motivations are superb. Two participants work at a low-impact level, a great advantage for most viewers. The stretches, rotations, kicks, taps, and swings are more than enough to keep the tape visually and athletically varied. The music track is appropriately familiar and underscored. This video is an interesting, authoritative alternative for any library.
